For our second trip out we went back to King Harbor to try again for some perch. Today the weather was great, sunny and not to hot and no wind. The only issue was that high tide was coming late in the morning so when we go there around 7:30am the low tide had just finished.
I packed up the same as the last time, and got a new milk carton to use in the wagon this time, and set up my rig a little different. This time I went with a #4 hook with a 1 oz egg sinker with a split shot. I used to use this for live bait in the past so I though I would try it out again.

Stayed with the cut squid and peas and we went to work. More people out at the pier this week, with the good weather and all. The half day boat City of Redondo was picking up passengers and after they left the pier cleared off other than the people eating outside at Poly’s on the Pier.
Casted out and Jonathan and I fished for a while. The water was clear and I could see bait fish and some smelt swimming in the shallows right where the rocks and sandy bottom meet. Nothing was biting so I changed up to my bait rig to try for some. Put it on Jonathan’s rig and dropped it down. Now, I have never fished for bait off the pier, other than for tommy cods for halibut fishing, so I need to learn more about this. Nothing hit the rig, but I was getting little hits on my peas and squid combo. By this time Jonathan was a bit tired of fishing and the people who work at the sportfishing shop had come with their dog. Jonathan started playing with him and asking Dede (Sorry if I got your name wrong!) was talking with him. Jonathan would go in the store and ask what everything was and why (he is 4 years old). She gave him a few jelly lures and he was a happy camper.
By this time a couple of other anglers showed up and began fishing at the end of the pier. I think they were mom and sun and were fishing with about 6 hooks with squid and a pyramid sinker. They did not have much luck, just like us. They did end up catching a large sole when we were leaving.
We did not get skunked though. I caught two very very small sand dabs. I think that is what they were. At first I though they were baby halibut, but after taking a closer look at the pictures I believe they were sole. Either way, they were babies and way to little to keep. So we took some pics and threw both back.

I only knew I had hooked them because I felt them hit, I thought I had lost both until I brought them up. Way too small. (see the pictures).

At around 10am we packed up and headed out. The whale watch boat was coming in so we called it a day. I gave the other anglers our left over squid an chummed the rest of the peas out for them.
Next weekend I plan to go out on Sunday morning again. Maybe this time we will try the Belmont Pier or maybe Cabrillo. I’ve fished both in the past, and would like to catch a few mackerel for Jonathan to fight.
