5th Trip: Cabrillo Pier and Belmont Pier

Decided to head back out to the piers again. This time I had my brother in law and my two nephews Joshua and Justin come with us. They live in San Pedro so we headed down to Cabrillo Pier first. They had never been fishing before so I was hoping to not get skunked.

Rigged up with stripped squid and fished both sides of the pier. Not much happened for a few hours. I finally got a small halibut. No skunk at least.

I did have a run in with a guy who caught a 12inch halibut. The moment he brought it over he stepped on it and threw it in the cooler. I saw the whole thing go down, went over and asked to see what he caught. He said he did not speak english and he caught nothing. Not wanting to push it with the kids there I called the DFG hotline and let it go.

So we packed it up and went down to Belmont Pier in Long Beach.

More people here than at Cabrillo. Got a spot mid pier and set up. I put a sabiki rig on a cheap kids rod and reel and gave it to Justin to work. We’ll it paid off, he started hooking tommy cod. Ended up being his first fish ever.

He caught a total of 3 in about 2 hours. Missed a few as well. We ended up doing better than everyone else around us.

Good trip overall even though the fish count was low. Look forward to next time.
