Decided to head out and do a semi-private charter on the Betty G out of Redondo Sport Fishing. Got my friend Deepak, my cousin Jason, Lorenzo and Sergio to come down. It was a beautiful day out, clear crisp and perfect.
Picked up the boat in the harbor headed over and got some frozen squid. Only two other people were on the boat with us, so lots of room, and we brought our own drinks and food. Headed straight out from the harbor to some sculpin fishing. The captain said they had great luck the day before, limiting out so he wanted to make sure we headed home with some in the bag. Dropped anchor and I used my cousins light calico rod to start out with. We were doing a drop rig with a 2/3 oz torpedo sinker on the bottom and leadhead above it.
I dropped down and got hit right away hard. Worked it up and low and behold, a nice legal sand bass.
It had been a while for me to be out on the water so it was a good start. The sculpin started to bit right away and it was wide open all over the boat.
This was Deepak’s first time fishing so when he hooked up for the first time it was fun to watch. Brought up a nice sculpin for his first fish. Not a bad way to start a new hobby.
We stayed on the spot for about 2 1/2 hours, all sculpin and some octopus as well, that’s why the the sculpin where happy. I pulled up a nice size one a few times.
I never get pics of myself fishing, I think this is the only one I have…
Lorenzo was slaying the little ones one the bow…
Brought up our limits, or was close so decided to go farther north for sand bass.
Next stop was near the Hermosa Pier, straight out. Another rock pile dropped down and started getting hits right away. Problem was it was perch town down there as well. We worked the spot for about an hour, got a few short calicos and more perch. Lots of blacksmith perch. I kept a few for my wifes mom. She likes them whole.
I went to a smaller hook, and pulled up a few more as well as a nice whitefish that we had to release. My friend Deepak hooked up with something big, it took line and he did not know what to do. He ended up losing it on the bottom.
The wind started to kick up and it was time to go in. Time for the jackpot. Everyone, thought it was going to be my sand bass, but Sergio pulls out this big headed sculpin and guess what…
Lost it by a hair. Great trip over all I would recommend the Betty G anytime to anyone, they were great and everyone had a great time. Hope to do it again soon!
