8th Trip: Irvine Lake 12/30/08

Headed up to Irvine Lake for the first time in 20+ years. Decided to get back into going out and fishing now that we’ve settled into the new house and the twins are older. My mom and step dad live in the water district covered by Irvine Lake so they get 2 free passes a month. Can’t let them go to waste!

My cousin Jason came down around 6am and we packed up and headed up to Irvine Lake. Got their around 6:30am, no line and headed into the bait shop to pick up some night crawlers and get some advice. Ended up going around to the flats and set up shop at the small concrete launch ramp. Had to walk out to it, but with the kid we wanted to stay away from everyone, don’t need him casting into other peoples lines.

Set up with power bait and nightcrawlers and fished for about 2 hours with no hits. Jonathan practiced his casting with his little rod and got good at casting out with a bobber. Got our first hookup on the power bait, nice rainbow and Jonathan’s first rainbow trout.

Another dad brought his 3 kids down and fished with us. They started hooking up as well and caught a total of 4 rainbows. The kids had a blast.

We had a hard hookup around noon on a night crawler. Jason fought it in and to our surprise is was a nice size channel catfish around 2.5lbs. Jonathan got a kick out of it, nice fish as well.

Got one more rainbow on the day, let Jonathan bring this one in as well.

We decided to pack up and go over to the kids lake. The other dad was there with his kids and they did well, getting 3 more rainbows. We got skunked at the little lake!

Overall good trip, 3 fish and my wifes mom cooked them up and loved them. Look forward to our next trip there!
