Friday the 13th, always a good day to go fishing. At least it was not the 13th trip on the 13th! Not being able to go out on the boat last week (Sunday) because of the weather did not make it any better.
We had planned to go up to Big Bear Lake today so my cousin Jason and Deepak met up at 4:30am to drive up. The only problem was the weather. A storm had rolled in and it was already snowing up in Big Bear. We were not ready for that so we talked it over and decided to keep it local and try El Dorado Park in Long Beach near my cousins house. Checked the DFG site and it was stocked last week. So we drove down and checked it out. One of the nicer park lakes I’ve been too, but after 2 hours of soaking the bait no luck so we talked it over and decided to head down to the ocean before the storm rolled in.

So we packed up and headed down to Cabrillo Pier in San Pedro. I’ve fished this pier last year at he same time and it was slow, but I do like the view. Headed down picked up some squid and got to the pier. No one was there, except for a few guys fishing on the breakwall. Geared up at the center of the pier and sat it out.
Love the tommy cod signs. In the past I’ve had some interesting conversations with people keeping these on the pier. I wouldn’t eat one, but some people do.

I started throwing a root beer colored scampi along the inside of the pier against the breakwall and got one solid hit where the wall had been repaired. Didn’t get nothing else. Another guy did show up and said he did well with jacksmelt the day before, but the water is very cold this time of year so we ended up with nothing but some small crabs that came up for the ride when reeling in. All let go before coming all the way up.

Packed it up and decided to head back to drop my cousin off. He suggested we try Pier J near the Queen Mary real quick. So we headed over and soaked for about 1/2 hour. Nothing there either.

So to sum it all up SKUNK. But with the cold water and the storm moving in what more did I expect. Still want to go up to Big Bear, and with March 1st coming we will get out on the boats some more. Got some new reels and my squidder updated, which I will post about sometime this week.
