34th Trip: Twilight Trip on the Spectra 7-7-10

Got to head out on our first twilight of the season last Wednesday on the Spectra. The sand bass bite had just started to heat up and I got a group of a few new people together to come along. My friends Deepak and Patty who have come out with me before brought 3 new people along, Shaun, Tara and Kyle. My son Jonathan rounded out the group.

Left the dock right around 7pm and hit the bait barge for some anchovies.

Getting bait…

Things looked good from earlier in the day, the Spectra had done well on a 3/4 day trip on the bass in the afternoon and we were heading right back out to the same spot. The winds were up a little, but died down right after the sun set.

Getting ready to fish…

Got to our first spot of the night, the same spot that they had fished on earlier and we found a big friend. A tanker had pulled up and dropped literally right on the spot. So we had to go find a new spot.

We anchored up about 5 minutes away on a mud bottom and started to chum and work the bottom. We also dropped over the squid lights to see if that would attract them to the surface. No love here except for a good size sting ray. Kyle got the first fish on the boat.

Pulled anchor and tried on another spot. Pulled up a few small starry rockfish and got our two sand bass for the night on this spot. Tara and Kyle got one each.

Tried another spot with no love again. We were not the only ones having issues with the bass, on the radio the 4 other boats around us were not doing well either. The bite had just died off that night. So to salvage the night we headed out the the sculpin grounds to help fill the bags.

Everyone ended up catching sculpin throwing back a bunch of just 10 inchers, and by this time it was getting late so we decided to call it a night and head back into port. Jonathan fell asleep around 9, so he was missing from most of the photos and missed the sculpin.

Totals for the night were 2 Sand Bass, 15 Sculpin, 3 Starry Rockfish. Even though we did not catch much everyone had a great time fishing, not just catching.

Billy and the crew of the Spectra were excellent as always, trying hard to get us on the bass. I have a couple of full day charters coming up on the boat, so I am looking forward to getting out there again!
