44th Trip: 1/2 Day on the Spectra 10-16-11

Once again it was a beautiful day out on the water, and with sardines already in the bait tanks from a trip the day before we left 22nd Street Landing and headed out to our salmon grouper spot. I do get asked why we hit these rockfish almost everytime I take out a new group, and the answer is simple, they are big fish, easy to catch and everyone has a great time. They are also good eating fish, so everyone is happy. As we headed out to the spot we were surrounded by blue whales spouting and showing around the boat. Most stayed a few hundred feet away, but we still saw the huge whales as they fed around the area. We hit the spot and drifted across it, it was slow pickings and in the end we got a total of 11 bocaccio for about 3 hours of work. I hooked up on a big one and David brought it up for his first big fish on the water.

We still had time left on the day so we hit a rock just outside the breakwater near the beginning of the horseshoe kelp area. We picked away at small calico bass, and lots of blacksmith perch and smaller fish. Ted and I fished on the bow, and Ted brought up some big rubber lip perch and I found a rock full of buttermouth perch. We stayed on it for about an hour to give everyone a fill of fishing on the spot and headed back in. Great day for David and everyone was happy! I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story. The season will be winding down as the holidays get close and I look forward to fishing next year!

43rd Trip: 1/2 Day on the Spectra 9-18-11

Got back out with Captain Chris and the Spectra after a long break from fishing. We met up at 22nd Street LandingThis time out was my daughter Katelyn, Chris and Alan who have been out fishing with us before. Ruth and her husband Rick who had never been before and my mother in-law Martha. The weather was beautiful all day and after getting some sardines from the San Pedro Bait Barge we headed out to our salmon grouper spot. The currents were not co-operating with us but we still were able to land limits of large bocaccio, and all the first timers got to hook up and land their first big fish on the boat. Had a great time as always, great weather, friends and good fishing. Can’t ask for more. I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story.

42nd Trip: Twilight Bass Trip on the Spectra 8-17-11

Finally got back out on the water this year with Jonathan and friends. Been a busy year for me, got some freshwater fishing in as well, but very little saltwater. Set up a twilight on the Spectra which is now running out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. My friends Chris and Noreen came back out again with us along with Kyle who went out last summer on a twilight with us. He brought along two friend, it was the first time out on the water for both of them. Captain Chris and Ted were the crew for the night and we stopped at the San Pedro bait barge and picked up some anchovies and some squid. It was a beautiful night, warm water and no wind perfect night for hunting sand bass.

Got to our spot on Izors Reef and started to work away at the bass. It was slow fishing but steady at times. We decided to wait out the spot as other twilight boats came and went. We ended up with 30 bass on board, Jonathan caught one small sculpin as well. Beautiful night on the water, with no wind and nice and flat. Everyone had a great time, and the new guys got their first salt water fish, both sand bass. Captain Chris and Ted did a great job as always on the Spectra and we hope to get back out here in September on a full day or 3/4 day trip!

41st Trip: Arrowbear Lake 5-7-11

It’s been a slow year for me fishing with everything else going on in life. We did get to go out and do a little trout fishing at Arrowbear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. We were up visiting my mom at her cabin in Lake Arrowhead, so we drove the kids over to the lake and I got a few lines wet. We were only there a for a little while, but its a nice lake right next to a park and baseball field. A few other people were fishing, but no trout were being caught. I did check the stocking schedule and it looked like it was stocked the week before.

I fished on the park side of the lake with a few different kinds of power bait. No takers. We plan to try fishing it again when we go up or Lake Gregory as well.

More Old Glumace Family Fishing Photos…

I have not been out on the water for the past month or so with the season winding down and bottom fishing closed it’s been a slow January 2011 for everyone in the industry. So I’ve been trying to catch up on scanning all of the families old photos and came across some more fishing photos. I knew I had a photo of my first Black Sea Bass I caught on the Matt Walsh over 25 years ago (about 1986 or 87). I remember fighting the baby and thought it was a huge sand bass. Got it out on the Horseshoe Kelp. Let the little guy go, maybe he is a big boy now somewhere out there.

My dad David Glumace also got one a few years before in 1986. Here is his photo.

Also found photos of my dads boat he got when he was a teenager in the early seventies. He had it docked down near the Ford Bridge in LA/Long Beach harbor.

A few people have emailed me about my dad, asking how he has been etc. He grew up down in the harbor fishing and working. He also worked at Todd Shipyard in San Pedro and at the Long Beach Navy Base repairing ships as a mechanic so many people knew him in the area. He also fished almost every day on the Matt Walsh after he got hurt in the late 1980′s. For those of you who don’t know, he passed away in December of 1991 from pneumonia at the age of 34. Amazing it will be 2o years this December, and I am now the same age as he was when he died. If it was not for him I would not have this site.

I also found a photo of myself and my dad fishing at Irvine Lake (I think!) in the mid eighties.

Last but not least is a photo I found of my grandfather Eugene (Gene) Glumace. This was in the early 1990′s at Big Bear Lake was a bass. I don’t think I was on this trip with him, we usually fished trout in the winter up there. Sad to say he passed away back in 1996.

Quick trip down memory lane. I do find it amazing that I only have a few photos from all my time fishing with my dad, but I have tons of them now with my kids. Guess we get to thank digital cameras for that!

40th Trip: Catalina on the Spectra 12-10-10

Put together our 2nd lobster trip of 2010 and our last trip of the year on the Spectra on Sunday, December 10th. Got our usually group of regulars together for this special trip over to the island for some hooping. Noreen, Michael, Chris, Lanny and my son Jonathan came on down. The weather was beyond good, flat all afternoon and night and it was in the mid 70′s all day. Could not ask for better conditions in December!!

Picked up a few scoops of bait from the barge and headed off to the island. We did a quick stop at a spot where some sand bass were biting a day or two before. It was slow picking, I got a nice sand bass and Jonathan brought up a bunch of perch, small calico bass and even a nice sized sheephead that popped off at the surface. Only stayed a little while and headed off to our spot at the island to drop our hoops. Had a big lunch/dinner on the way.

From 40th Trip: Catalina on the Spectra

Got there right before dusk and set our traps. Did a total of about 7 drops and brought up 12 legal lobsters to take home. Everyone had a great time pulling up the traps, had some shorts mixed in that went back home to grow up bigger for us to get another day. Everyone got to go home with a few nice lobster and a few fillets to boot. Once again Billy and crew did a great job, and we look forward to doing it again soon!
