We still had time left on the day so we hit a rock just outside the breakwater near the beginning of the horseshoe kelp area. We picked away at small calico bass, and lots of blacksmith perch and smaller fish. Ted and I fished on the bow, and Ted brought up some big rubber lip perch and I found a rock full of buttermouth perch. We stayed on it for about an hour to give everyone a fill of fishing on the spot and headed back in. Great day for David and everyone was happy! I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story. The season will be winding down as the holidays get close and I look forward to fishing next year!

Finally got back out on the water this year with Jonathan and friends. Been a busy year for me, got some freshwater fishing in as well, but very little saltwater. Set up a twilight on the Spectra which is now running out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. My friends Chris and Noreen came back out again with us along with Kyle who went out last summer on a twilight with us. He brought along two friend, it was the first time out on the water for both of them. Captain Chris and Ted were the crew for the night and we stopped at the San Pedro bait barge and picked up some anchovies and some squid. It was a beautiful night, warm water and no wind perfect night for hunting sand bass.

Got to our spot on Izors Reef and started to work away at the bass. It was slow fishing but steady at times. We decided to wait out the spot as other twilight boats came and went. We ended up with 30 bass on board, Jonathan caught one small sculpin as well. Beautiful night on the water, with no wind and nice and flat. Everyone had a great time, and the new guys got their first salt water fish, both sand bass. Captain Chris and Ted did a great job as always on the Spectra and we hope to get back out here in September on a full day or 3/4 day trip!

I fished on the park side of the lake with a few different kinds of power bait. No takers. We plan to try fishing it again when we go up or Lake Gregory as well.

It’s been a long few months of no fishing and lots of work but I was able to get out to the 2011 Fred Hall show at the Long Beach Convention Center on Thursday and brought my son Jonathan out to his first show. The past few shows I have worked a booth or the floor so I have not really got to just wander and have fun like we did this time.

Got to the show around 3:30pm and there were no lines and we got right in. Jonathan did some practice casting with the DFG and got a junior license.

Headed out to the rainbow trout fishing pond and got right in (there was not that many people around the whole night) and Jonathan got a nice sized trout that we took home.

Jonathan also tried out his bow and arrow skills and hunting skills.

I went down and tried out some of the new Avet reels and did some casting. I did much better than last year in the lagoon.

We headed back in to the convention center and walked the rows of fun stuff and saw a bunch of old friends in the industry. Take a look at the slideshow at the beginning of the post to see all the photos.

Overall the show felt slow and did not have the energy like previous years. I know times are tough and the money is not being spent like it used to in the industry, but I also felt like not much had changed. The show was the same as last year, nothing really new or that stood out. It was the Thursday of the show, so that may have accounted for some of it but after talking with friends who did the show and also attended over the weekend none were really impressed by anything.

What was important is that Jonathan had a great time and got a whole bunch of goodies to bring home! I am starting to plan out my trips for the year, and I really hope that it will be a much better year fishing than last!

Also found photos of my dads boat he got when he was a teenager in the early seventies. He had it docked down near the Ford Bridge in LA/Long Beach harbor.

A few people have emailed me about my dad, asking how he has been etc. He grew up down in the harbor fishing and working. He also worked at Todd Shipyard in San Pedro and at the Long Beach Navy Base repairing ships as a mechanic so many people knew him in the area. He also fished almost every day on the Matt Walsh after he got hurt in the late 1980′s. For those of you who don’t know, he passed away in December of 1991 from pneumonia at the age of 34. Amazing it will be 2o years this December, and I am now the same age as he was when he died. If it was not for him I would not have this site.

I also found a photo of myself and my dad fishing at Irvine Lake (I think!) in the mid eighties.

Last but not least is a photo I found of my grandfather Eugene (Gene) Glumace. This was in the early 1990′s at Big Bear Lake was a bass. I don’t think I was on this trip with him, we usually fished trout in the winter up there. Sad to say he passed away back in 1996.

Quick trip down memory lane. I do find it amazing that I only have a few photos from all my time fishing with my dad, but I have tons of them now with my kids. Guess we get to thank digital cameras for that!
