44th Trip: 1/2 Day on the Spectra 10-16-11

Once again it was a beautiful day out on the water, and with sardines already in the bait tanks from a trip the day before we left 22nd Street Landing and headed out to our salmon grouper spot. I do get asked why we hit these rockfish almost everytime I take out a new group, and the answer is simple, they are big fish, easy to catch and everyone has a great time. They are also good eating fish, so everyone is happy. As we headed out to the spot we were surrounded by blue whales spouting and showing around the boat. Most stayed a few hundred feet away, but we still saw the huge whales as they fed around the area. We hit the spot and drifted across it, it was slow pickings and in the end we got a total of 11 bocaccio for about 3 hours of work. I hooked up on a big one and David brought it up for his first big fish on the water.

We still had time left on the day so we hit a rock just outside the breakwater near the beginning of the horseshoe kelp area. We picked away at small calico bass, and lots of blacksmith perch and smaller fish. Ted and I fished on the bow, and Ted brought up some big rubber lip perch and I found a rock full of buttermouth perch. We stayed on it for about an hour to give everyone a fill of fishing on the spot and headed back in. Great day for David and everyone was happy! I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story. The season will be winding down as the holidays get close and I look forward to fishing next year!

43rd Trip: 1/2 Day on the Spectra 9-18-11

Got back out with Captain Chris and the Spectra after a long break from fishing. We met up at 22nd Street LandingThis time out was my daughter Katelyn, Chris and Alan who have been out fishing with us before. Ruth and her husband Rick who had never been before and my mother in-law Martha. The weather was beautiful all day and after getting some sardines from the San Pedro Bait Barge we headed out to our salmon grouper spot. The currents were not co-operating with us but we still were able to land limits of large bocaccio, and all the first timers got to hook up and land their first big fish on the boat. Had a great time as always, great weather, friends and good fishing. Can’t ask for more. I’ll let the photos tell the rest of the story.

33rd Trip: Great Day Rockfishing and Sculpin on the Spectra

Got to get back out on the Spectra again this week on Thursday for some more local rockfishing. Had a few returning people like my friend Noreen (she’s been on all my charters this year), my brother in law Chris and good friend and fishing buddy Deepak from my previous trips along with a few new faces like my cousin Jason and fellow teacher Chris. This was my 4th charter of the year with most had not fished before or had been out a few times with me. This was also the first time I had brought out my daughter Katelyn without my son Jonathan, so it was shaping up to be a great trip for her and I.

I had just done a trip last Sunday 6/13 (view the report here) on the Spectra with a group and had an excellent day, so with the same type of group on board we opted to do the same type of trip. We were going to hit up the salmon grouper then move over to the sculpin grounds on this 1/2 day run.

Left the dock from Pierpoint right before six with Captain Chris (we had 3 Chris’ on this trip) and deckhands Ted and Dennis plus the owner Billy was along for the trip as well.

Captain Chris gave everyone the rundown on what we were going to do as we headed out. Hit the spot for salmon grouper (Bocaccio) that we have been out at before then head over to fish sculpin and be back at the dock around 1:30pm or so.

Stopped by the bait barge and picked up some sardines. The bigger the bait, the bigger the salmon grouper. The did have live squid as well at the barge.

Nice flat run out to the hole. Weather was perfect today, even better than Sunday, which was great. It was flat the whole day no wind even coming back in.

Everyone got to see some dolphins play with the boat darting along the bow and playing the wake as well. Slowed down the engines out near the rigs and got the first yell from Ted to drop down. Everyone was set up with an 8oz sinker with a double dropper loop with big hooks, and big sardines.

Everyone dropped and hit the bottom. Everyone hooked up and fun began. I got hit hard after about 30 seconds on the bottom and set the hook. Started to crank away and asked Katelyn if she wanted to help, but she didn’t want to. It was a nice fish on.

Brought it up and it was my first big Red in a long time! Took one of the big sardines. We got one like this 2 trips back as well.

My brother in-law Chris hooked up along side of me, and was on something nice. Either 2 salmon grouper, or one big one. It was his first big fish out on the salt in California, and the biggest grouper of the day on the boat.

We did a few more drifts but even with no wind, the current was pushing us. The Spectra with her bow thrusters usually can keep us on a spot but we missed it a few times. Pulled a few more salmon groupers on board for a passenger limit.

Decided to clean it all up and set out for the sculpin grounds about 20 minutes away. I grabbed a quick nap as we went down below. Dennis re-rigged everyone up with a single leadhead dropper loop with a 4″ green mojo and a 4oz torpedo sinker. Last Sunday the sculpin were hitting the green color hard, and I had a big bag of them from the Fred Hall show still, so no reason to mess with success. We did use cut up frozen squid this time instead of the stripped mackerel. The engines slowed down and the anchor dropped so I came up and started fishing with Katelyn. Got a nice sculpin on the first drop.

The sand dabs where back at this spot as well, and unlike the last trip, they were pecking away at the bait and stealing it. Last trip it was almost a hookup everytime with a sculpin or sand dab, so you had to feel and set the hook faster this time. Lots of nice sized sculpin came up all over the boat.

Called it a day around 11:30am and started to head back in. We had a nice cooler full of fish for everyone and Ted started to get to work on our way back in cleaning them all up. Ended up with just about limits of sculpin and about 20 or so sand dabs along with the salmon grouper.

Once again the Spectra came through for me and my group and the crew was excellent. Dennis went way above and beyond the call to help everyone have a great time, and Chris was all over the place helping everyone. Ted put us on the fish as always and did an beautiful (and hard) job cleaning and putting everything together. I can’t recommend this boat enough to people. Billy runs a great operation with Spectra Sportfishing. I have a few more trips that I’m getting together for the next month or so including an overnight to the outer islands (San Nick, Santa Barbara or SCI) so it will be a fun summer! Plus everyone went home happy and with a lot of fish to fill the freezers.

32nd Trip: Limits of Huge Bocaccio, Sculpin and More on the Spectra 6/13/10

Finally got back out on the water this past Sunday with Jonathan and friends who went on my April charter to Catalina on the Tide Change (read report here). Got back out on the Spectra again as well. This was a 1/2 day run out to the rockfish hole and hit the sculpin grounds for some good fishing for this group. Left the dock from Pierpoint right before six with Captain Chris and deckhands Ted and Dennis. This was my 3rd charter of the year taking out people who have never fished before, or have only been out with me once or twice. It’s fun working with and watching people learn to enjoy fishing.

Chris gave everyone the rundown on what we were going to do as we headed out. Hit the spot for salmon grouper (Bocaccio) that we have been out at before (read my report on my last trip on the Spectra) then head over to fish sculpin and be back at the dock around 1:30pm or so. For the majorty of the people out on this trip (other than myself, my son Jonathan) this was only the second trip out on the water. The last charter we caught a few rockfish and conditions were tough, today was a total 180, great flat weather and a ton of fish. Limits on almost everything for everyone and crew. Just as a taste of what is to come, here is the biggest fish of the day and our final load of fish in the cooler…

Stopped by the bait barge and picked up some sardines and small mackerel. The bigger the bait, the bigger the salmon grouper.

Got out to the spot in about an hour and Dennis took care of everyone going out, rigging up and making sure everything ready.

Everyone got to see some dolphins play with the boat darting along the bow and playing the wake as well. Weather was a bit overcast, but flat and nice. Slowed down the engines out near the rigs and got the first yell from Ted to drop down. Everyone but my son Jonathan was set up with an 8oz sinker with a double dropper loop with big hooks, and big sardines or small mackerel. Jonathan had a single hook, but I was helping him fish with a big mackerel on it, hoping for one of those big lings to hit down there.

Everyone dropped, a few birds nests happened, a few people had never used a conventional set up but everyone got to the bottom to get hit on the first drift. Everyone hooked up and fun began. I’ll let the photos tell the story.

Did a total of 3 drifts on the spot. Had a few tangles but we pulled our boat limits in about 45 minutes on the spot. Ted the deckhand caught one of the biggest salmon groupers we had seen in a long time fishing with a big mackerel. Here is the fish in front of Jonathan (and yes, this is not held out from him, it’s right in front of his chest).

We cleaned everything up and headed out about 20 minutes away to the sculpin grounds to see what we could do there. Anchored up and got to work. Kept the same set up as the salmon grouper, but I had a big bag of green 2″ plastics I picked up at the Fred Hall Show earlier this year and I switched out to the lead head with one on. We fished with cut mackerel from the bait tank along with the lead head. Me and Jonathan were the first to the bottom and hooked up on a nice sculpin right away.

We also found the sand dabs in the same spot and if you did not have a green plastic on, all you got was the sand dabs. Every drop produced either a nice sized sand dab or a sculpin, hardly ever came up empty handed on the boat. So for the next few hours we slayed them all. Everyone was having fun, most had never seen or caught either and we had limits on sculpin and about 50 sand dabs in 2 hours.

31st Trip: Local Rockfishing on the Spectra 4/25/10

After getting out 2 weeks ago with the large charter group (38 people, view the full report here) I did on the Tide Change to Catalina I was looking forward to my first trip out on the Spectra out of Spectra Sportfishing and get some me time fishing in. This was just a family fun trip, 1/2 day local rockfishing shake down cruise with a few of my friends and family that owner Billy Keleman put together for us. Other than my cousin Jason, son Jonathan and I everyone else was either new to fishing or had only a few trips out.

Got down to Pierpoint Landing and met up with everyone around 5:30am and got out of the dock right at 6:00pm.

The Spectra is an impressive boat, with a ton of room on deck, big bait tanks and a full kitchen and bunks for everyone. She has a unique tower and stack, so she is not hard to miss when out on the water.

Billy and Ted were on board to help out and we hit up the bait barge for some scoops of sardines and small macs. I tried for some macs or tommy cod for Jonathan to play with but no love at the barge.

Bait looked great and we settled in for a ride out to a sweet spot that they have for rockfishing.

Billy took care of everyone’s rigs as we headed out. Large hooks on a dropper loop, some rods 2 hooks some 1 hook and an 8oz torpedo sinker. I got to fish with spectra for the first time rockfishing and let me tell you, I’m now a convert. I could tell the difference with the hit vs. the mono that I had on my rods. Most of the big fish came off the rods rigged up with spectra and very large hooks.

Got out to the spot and did the first drift. If you missed on the first drop you had to wait till we moved back and repositioned on it again. First fish up was Gus and a nice salmon grouper (bocaccio).

I lost one on this drift while bringing it up, but made up on the next drift. All these fish were big quailty salmon groupers, I would say all personal bests for this area. Billy and Ted worked hard putting us on these fish and it paid off.

We tried a few more stops looking for reds and other rockfish but nothing panned out. The water temp was around 57 degrees so it was slow. Decided to head back in and hit Izor’s before calling it a day. All morning it was grey and overcast, but as flat as a lake. Got to Izor’s and it cleared up to blue skies. There were about 10 other boats out there with us as well.

Called it a day around 1pm and headed back to the barn. Ted took care of the filleting and everyone went home with a nice bag of fish, plus some nice heads for fish soup.

This was one of the best local rockfishing trips I’ve ever been on and I would like to thank Billy Keleman again for putting this little taste test together for my group. I look forward to booking 1/2 day and overnight trips to the island with him. He runs a top notch operation on a beautiful boat that is a great platform for a 6 pack trip, comfortable and tons of room! He will be running out of Long Beach through June 30th then moving the boat down to San Diego starting July 1st. 24th Trip: Slow Afternoon 1/2 Day on the Icon 8/15/09

With school starting for my son this coming Thursday, fallball baseball and my Fall 09 classes I teach starting in a few weeks I wanted to take Jonathan out on the boat one last time this summer. Decided on the Icon out of Long Beach Sportfishing again, did a good run last weekend (Read about it here) and hoped it would turn out the same. This time I called in for the 3 for 2 special early in the week and my cousin Jason joined us again. From 24th Trip: Slow Afternoon 1/2 Day on the Icon 8/16

Got down to the landing around 11:45 and picked up our passes. Looked like a lighter load today, around 35 or so. The morning run was much heavier. They came in on time and it did not go well for them. Only a handful of fish on plastics in the morning. No anchovies for bait today, only huge sardines. Here is a pic of what we had for bait.

Captain Shawn got on the horn as we left, slow slow morning a few calicos here and there on plastic. Basically good luck today with no bait that was worth anything. Oh wells, we win some and lose some. Luckily we has a bunch of plastic in the bags.

Nice thing was there was a bunch of kids on board for Jonathan to have friends and they had a great time all day with the great weather. Jonathan did not end up fishing much, just watching is new friends fish (thanks to their families they were great with Jonathan) and sitting in the galley.

To sum up the trip, about 5 moves around the horse shoe, no current, no birds, nada, nada nada at all. First 4 stops I got 1 bite and the guy next to me got one legal calico (it was his first time out so that was good). Maybe about 10 bass the whole day, and neither of us got skunked at least. On the last stop my cousin got 2 dinky mackerel and I got one short calico. When I hooked up Jonathan was in the galley and missed bringing it in. Oh wells.

I was happy to be out on the water before the hectic school/work schedule begins this week (It’s lots of fun with 4 kids in the house) and have had some great outings the last few weeks.

Once again I would highly recommend Long Beach Sportfishing. Easy to get to, great crew (they tried hard on this run) and fun to go out with. They have some good specials going on right now from the looks of things in the office http://www.longbeachsportfishing.com/. The Icon is a good boat and has seen some years but like most of the other ships in the SoCal 1/2 day fleet she does her job well. Liked the new shirt that ApexPredator sent out to me, comfortable and I liked the color better than the other. My full review will be on my site under product reviews.

One weird thing did happen to us, Jonathan put up his light spinning rod when we go on board and it disappeared. Both me and my cousin checked the whole boat a few times over and did not find it till the end of the trip, back up in the holder. It had been used by someone on the boat the whole time, reel was wet and it was tied up different than what usually do. It’s a beater walmart rod so it would not have killed me to lose it, but with all the rental rods on board it did not surprise us.
